Vintage men's tights adverts: Wolford 'waist socks'

Back in 1998 Wolford produced a style of tights for men, which they curiously called 'waist socks'. I recall that at the time they were quite expensive.

It's a shame that Wolford don't make any tights specifically for men. I have, however, reviewed the Wolford Opaque 70 tights and they are excellent.

  1. From memory, I believe that these tights were approximately £55 per pair. That would be a lot of money for a pair of tights in 2012; in 1998 it was nothing short of extortionate! Effectively Wolford simply priced themselves out of the market and soon pulled these from their product range.

  2. I really must admit that I find the idea of men wearing tights very uncomfortable. Something about it does'nt sit right with me. I supposed I am so used that only women wear tights.

  3. Hi
We have to remember that tights was originally a male product... I still feel that they are a male product... Men have been wearing tights a lot longer than men...

Another example of gender changing product... A one-piece swimsuit.... Yes... Men where the first to wear one-piece swimsuits...

  4. I have tried a few Wolford tights.... I have found the Wolford NEON 40 tights are just outstanding... Highly recommended.....
Plus there is a bonus... A camouflaging effect for the legs, making the skin look smooth and flawless.

  5. Hi, this is Jessica

I just wanted to let you know that in a few days I'll put up a link on my blog to this story for my boys to read. You will most likely get some traffic from me because I'll send them to read your review.

  6. Recall these being sold sometime ago and about 5 - 10 years ago. I remember hearing about Wolford and men's Waist Socks. Dont think they sell them now.

  7. I bought a pair of Wolford men's waist socks (tights) back in 2000 and still have them today. They are excellent quality and are perfect for cold weather climates. When I went to the Wolford shop here in Brussels to buy another pair, I was told by the staff that they had been discontinued! Maybe they will market them again . . .

  8. I bought two pairs of the Waist Socks when they came out and only recently got rid of them as I managed to ruin them with some bleach. The Waist Socks would have probably lasted forever otherwise, they still fitted perfectly and apart from some minor pilling they were as good as new. Ridiculously expensive though and I have always preferred the Comfilon and Doyeah tights for men

  9. Wow, they were quite expensive for that time. Even nowadays £55 a pair of plain opaque tights seems quite a lot. We wish both Wolford and Gerbe hadn't discontinued their male ranges. Hopefully, both manufactures go for large sizes, which can fit men, too.

    Very informative post! Cheers

  10. Yes, they were expensive. But the Wolford range is reasonably priced I feel now for the quality. I think all the styles can be worn by men as the sizing options are excellent. The XL works well for me.
