Catching Up With Threads: Part One

We first introduced the Canadian hosiery brand Threads to Hosiery For Men readers exactly a year ago.

In March 2020 we spoke to Threads founder Xenia Chen. You can still read Part One and Part Two of our conversation in 2020.



We recently caught up with Xenia again. Here is Part One of our latest interview.

Hi Xenia. It's been a year since we first featured Threads on the blog. What kind of response did you get from Hosiery For Men readers who read about Threads?

We had a fantastic response from your feature last year! We ended up having lots of new male customers come from it. Thank you again for featuring us.

I hope you and all the Threads team are safe and well after what we have been through over the last year. What impact has the COVID-19 pandemic had on the business?

The pandemic definitely had a negative impact on the business at the beginning, when the majority of North America went into some sort of lockdown. Most people weren’t leaving their homes or getting dressed up and wearing tights! We saw a drop in sales but thankfully, it’s since recovered.



Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Threads was flexible enough to diversify into making face masks. Tell us about this and what products are available.

We launched Threads Helps very early in the pandemic. Our factory is in Italy, which was one of the first countries to be hit hard by the pandemic. We saw first hand what was about to unfold in North America and decided to start production before the wearing of masks was officially recommended by the government.

Similar to our brand ethos with hosiery, our goal was to create a high-quality, comfortable and effective mask at an affordable price so everyone has access to the best protection. We started off with our Standard Mask and have recently launched our Triple-Layer X-STATIC® Mask, which is made with silver yarn. Used by US Special Forces and NASA astronauts, X-STATIC® yarn is 99.9% pure silver, making it one of the most effective antimicrobial and antiviral materials for use in textiles. We also have masks for kids!

It’s great that Threads is a brand that is inclusive towards men who wear tights. Are you still managing to grow interest and sales to men?

Yes! Our male customer base has been growing quickly. Not only are they growing but we also have a very high engagement and repurchase rate among male customers, which means they’re really liking our tights and coming back for more! In addition, we have a lot of male customers who subscribe to one of our monthly plans. Male customers currently make up ~50% of our subscriber base.

Catching Up With Hēdoïne

It's always great to feature hosiery brand Hēdoïne at Hosiery For Men. We love their products, their inclusive ethos, their innovation and style.



We recently caught up with Hēdoïne founders Anna and Alex to catch up with what's been happening with the brand and to find out what's new.



We hope everyone at Hēdoïne is safe and well. What impact has the COVID-19 pandemic had on the business?

Like many businesses and individuals around the world, COVID-19 impacted us in all sorts of ways. The Hēdoïne team have now been working from home since March 2020 - over a year!! Border closures have caused delays in shipments at times and we’ve all had to get used to navigating very uncertain times. Luckily though, we are a digital business and so our Hēdoïnes have been able to access our website, shop and speak to our team without interruption. We have also focused on giving back however we can and in the past year we’ve raised funds for the World Health Organization, donated over 300 pairs of tights to Smart Works Charity and taken part in the 2.6 Challenge.

And what about Brexit? Has that impacted on retail to European customers?

The combination of the lockdowns across the UK and Europe, as well as Brexit has meant that shipping providers are experiencing extremely high volumes at the same time as new delivery restrictions are being imposed. Unfortunately, they are beyond anyone’s control at the moment and as a result, many orders from businesses all across the world have been delayed. At Hēdoïne, we have taken measures to guarantee quick delivery and are in the process of onboarding a second fulfilment center in Germany, which we are very excited about as it will mean that our EU customers will be able to get super-fast, uninterrupted delivery. The tights are already on the way there!

It’s great that Hēdoïne is a brand that is inclusive towards men who wear tights and other hosiery. Are you still managing to grow interest and sales to men?

We’ve always believed that Hēdoïne is an attitude, not a gender, not an age, and not an ethnicity. We love our diverse community of Hedoines and we’re so glad that our audience continues to grow to those that identify as women, men and those who prefer not to identify as either.

What Hēdoïne styles are men buying?

Our male customers seem to really love all of our styles. As with our women and non-binary customers, our male Hēdoïnes tend to adjust their tights with the seasons: 60 & 100 deniers for the winter, 40 deniers in early spring and autumn, and 20 deniers and nudes for the warmer months. Our expanded size range, including XL/XXL, has also been really well-received and we’re so grateful to be able to cater for different body shapes. Ultimately, we thrive on feedback and welcome any suggestions from our male customers on what they’d love to see from Hēdoïne.

What's next at Hēdoïne? Are there any new styles and products that we can expect to see soon?

We are working on a really exciting range of eco-friendly biodegradable tights which will soon launch across a number of deniers. We’re set to launch the first pair as soon as June - watch this space.
