Reviewed: Maximus 200 Denier Opaque Men's Tights

UK Tights recently updated and expanded their range of tights for men.

Eight new styles have been added to the Maximus range of men's tights.

In case you missed it, here is our interview about the Maximus range with Dawn Barber, managing director of UK Tights.

We have already reviewed the following Maximus styles.

This review will focus on the new Maximus 200 Denier Opaque Men's Tights.

Packaging

Packaging is simple. The tights are folded and then housed in a clear cellophane bag. Everything is then housed in the silver card envelope, with a cutaway window. All Maximus men's tights are packaged the same way.

Information on the packaging is minimal, with only a sticker that indicates the product and the size. This is the only way to differentiate Maximus styles.

Materials and features

This is how UK Tights describe this product:

"Maximus make some of the best items of leg wear for men, and one of the few brands of legwear that only make men's tights and nothing else. Here, Maximus has given us some amazing extra thick items, perfect for wearing in the harshest winter months. Originally, Maximus was made for outdoor pursuits and exercising in the great outdoors. Now they are returning to those roots with a brand new range of ultra opaque men's tights, perfect for the harshest outdoor conditions."

The Maximus 200 Denier Opaque Men's Tights are 200 denier. They are made from 95% Polyamide, 4% Elastane and 1% Polypropylene.

They certainly feel like a robust product, but to the touch they are also very smooth and soft.

The knit is dense and provides a complete opaque effect on the leg.

The Maximus 200 Denier Tights are completely sheer to waist with no demarcation between the leg and the brief.

The brief has a central seam that seams to be a hybrid of a conventional seam and flat seam. Externally it lies flat.

The depth of the brief is shallower than one might expect for men's tights, measuring just 24cm from the top of the waistband to the crotch. There is a gusset.

The 5cm-wide waistband is wide and stretchy.

Toes have a square finish and are not reinforced.

Colour range

The Maximus 200 Denier Opaque Men's Tights are available in Black only.

Sizing, fit and wearing experience

The Maximus 200 Denier Opaque Men's Tights are available in two sizes at UK Tights:
  • Small/Medium
  • Medium/Large
I trialled them in Medium/Large size.

This size chart provided by UK Tights is slightly confusing as the tights are available in just two sizes, not three. I worked out that Medium/Large would clearly be the best size for me, but this process could be made easier with a size chart that matched the actual sizing.

The tights provided a good fit. The material is stretchy and enveloped the legs really nicely. I loved the complete opaque coverage and the lovely smooth feel.

They felt warm and cosy.

Appearance is mainly matt with just a hint of sheen.

The brief stretched comfortably over the waist and hips, although some more depth would be welcome by most guys I feel.

I also liked how the tights moved with me, if that makes sense. The fit is so good on the leg, that you feel like you have a second (opaque skin).

Price and availability

The Maximus 200 Denier Opaque Men's Tights are priced at just £7.99.

Conclusion

Well firstly let me make a few observations:

  • There is nothing that really identifies the Maximus 200 opaques as "men's tights". For example, you might have expected a modified central seam to provide comfort for the male anatomy, or perhaps a much deeper brief (such as that routinely provided in almost all Wolford and Falke styles; this is why they work so well for male wearers).
  • The packaging could be improved with the use of a male model, so there is some idea of what the tights look like when worn.
  • These tights might well be a style designed for women that has been repackaged. It's hard to tell. Not that that is a major issue as tights are a unisex garment, and if the design and sizing is done right they can be worn by everyone.
Having said this, they are not by any means a poor product. I found them an extremely comfortable wear. If you want some warm tights, that fit well these certainly do what it says on the tin.

The price, at just £7.99, actually makes them a bargain.

  1. Being perfectly honest, I just see these as a waste of money. There is nothing unique about this product that distinguishes them as being 'for men' over any ordinary pair of tights, and having a square cut toe is cheap in the extreme and a truly backward step (and for £8). When you consider the excellent product on offer from Snag tights by comparison, great sizes and fit for men, an array of denier and colour options, there are ample options for all budgets from them and other brands without having to 'make do' with this inferior product.

  2. I think the style of this is ok. Center seam or seamless is ok. But as a male i hate double seam or relaxed any other styles. Double layer is uncomfortable and don’t fits well. Never.
For everyone please do the tights like this
