Hosiery For Men Interview With Threads

We were recently interviewed by hosiery brand Threads for their online blog.

You can read the whole conversation online here or below.

Can you tell us a bit about the Hosiery For Men blog? How did it come to be, what pushed you to want to start it and what is your target audience or reader?

I started writing and curating Hosiery For Men in 2011 and its now in its 11th year. I started writing it because there was very little on the internet that focused on men who wear tights. Well, you can find fetish sites of course but there wasn’t much that looked at it as normal and acceptable. There used to be a blog many years ago that reviewed hosiery from a male perspective but it ended and its archive disappeared also. I thought there was a gap that needed to be filled. I tried to create the kind of blog that I myself would like to read.

I had no idea how it would go when I started. However, it became clear quite quickly that lots of retailers and hosiery brands were keen to collaborate, send samples and support what I was doing.

On Hosiery For Men you will find hosiery reviews, news and features/interviews with brands and retailers. The target reader is broadly men who wear hosiery, and there are loads of them all over the world. The blog has a big international readership with most readers coming from the USA, the UK, Canada, Germany and France. There are also women readers, including partners of men who wear as well as women working for hosiery brands and retailers.

How long have you been wearing hosiery for?

Since I was 15. I took part in a Shakespeare play at school and was asked to wear opaque tights as part of the costume. I was amazed at how great they felt. Soon after that I started to buy tights for myself.

What do you feel the hosiery industry is missing (if anything)?

If they are missing anything it is acknowledging more openly that men are buying the hosiery they are making and selling. It’s a very open secret and I am convinced that all brands are aware that men are part of their customer base, and some have responded to this by creating larger sizing options. Some brands, of course, have also created products specifically designed for men.

The biggest gap is probably in creating more inclusive marketing and product imagery.

To be fair, the overall picture is much more positive than it used to be.

From your experience, what do you think men are looking for in a brand or product? And what do you look for personally?

I think there are two things that many men are looking for. Firstly, tights that are well-made, fit well and are comfortable. Secondly, genuine acknowledgement that we exist as customers. Personally, I look for quality – that means yarn with Elastane or Spandex, a generous leg length, a deeper brief with flat seams and gusset, and a wide, comfortable waistband.

Other than your blog, have you found any other communities (either online or in person) that our male customers could join if they're looking to communicate with other men that wear hosiery?

I have never found, nor sought out, a community in person. There have been forums in the past which were genuinely useful for sharing information and more. But all of them have closed over the years. At the moment, it’s mainly bloggers and Instagram accounts that are bringing people together and facilitating interaction between brands, retailers and male customers. For me, Instagram is the preferred social media platform for Hosiery For Men to disseminate information and connect with readers and a wider community.

What is your favorite way to style your hosiery?

I have to admit that I am not particularly adventurous in this regard. I have always mainly worn tights under jeans and trousers, as I love the insulation and comfort. From time to time I do go out wearing opaque tights under shorts.

What would you say to men who are curious about trying hosiery?

I would say that that curiosity should be followed. There might be thoughts about what it might feel like to wear tights, and the only way to address that is to give it a go.

What’s great about the internet is that, if needed, hosiery can be purchased online. However, I have always found retail staff in hosiery and department stores really helpful at giving advice and answering questions.

Brands, like Threads for example, are much more open these days to answering queries and giving advice to male customers. So if you are unsure about what to buy or have questions about sizing or anything else just get in touch with a brand or retailer. Many of them have a chat facility, and some retailers also curate a selection of tights for men.

On the Hosiery For Men blog you will also find a huge archive of hosiery reviews which can also help when making purchasing decisions. The i love hosiery blog is another great source for informed reviews and recommendations.

Reviewed: 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights From The Tights Club

Did you catch our recent interview with Leanne Goold, founder of The Tights Club?

Leanne informed us about the new range of recycled tights now available from The Tights Club.

"They are made in Italy from pre and post-consumer recycled yarn, so they make use of fabric that would otherwise go to landfill. By doing so they not only save water and energy usage but also drastically reduce emissions because the creation of new nylon releases nitrous oxide which is a potent greenhouse gas. That’s why I felt that recycled was the way to go, rather than biodegradable – it addresses a lot of the issues around sustainability rather than just waste, including raw material usage and other forms of ecological damage."

We have received both styles to trial and review: the 50 Denier Recycled Tights and the 80 Denier Recycled Tights for review.

Our first review will focus on the The Tights Club 80 Denier Recycled Tights.

This is how The Tights Club describe the new 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights:

"Our ethically made 80 denier black tights are made from recycled yarn which reduces emissions, energy consumption and water usage and saves fabric that would otherwise have gone to landfill."

Packaging

The Tights Club stress that their packaging has also been thought through to be environmentally-friendly.

"We pack the new tights in just tissue paper which although coloured is fully recyclable and obviously lighter for transport."

The tissue paper wrapping is fastened with a sticker that provides information on the colour and size.

Materials and features

The Tights Club 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights have been designed in the UK and made in Italy.

The yarn has been created with 3D knitting technology to provide lots of stretch and and optimum fit.

As Leanne explains:

"Thanks to the 3D knitting technology they have a great stretch in all directions, so they should provide a good fit for all body shapes and stretch up as well as out for our taller customers! The 3D technology also makes the tights more durable which is another tick for sustainability."

The tights did not look very long as I removed them from the tissue paper, but they have tremendous stretch!

They are made from 88% Recycled Nylon and 12% Elastane. The feel is soft and velvety.

The brief measures 24cm from the top of the waistband to the crotch.

Seams are flat and there is a gusset.

They are not quite sheer to waist, having a reinforcement band at the very top of the thigh. This is barely noticeable when worn.

The waistband is 5.5cm wide.

Toes are rounded and have reinforcement.

Sizing, fit and wearing experience

The Tights Club 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights are available in six sizes:
  • 1
  • 2
  • 3
  • 4
  • 5
  • 6
As well as hip and height information, each size corresponds to a UK size (8 to 34)

I wore a pair in Size 3.

Any worries that I initially had that the tights wouldn't be long enough in the leg were immediately dispelled. These tights have an impressive amount of stretch. The Size 3 was perfect for my 5'10" height.

The 3D knit and the high Elastane content in the yarn enables the tights to mould comfortably to whatever leg shape you have. Opaque coverage is dense and uniform, covering up any leg hair.

Appearance is mainly matt with just a slight sheen when caught in the light.

The brief is very comfortable, stretching easily above the waist and hips. The wide waistband provided good support without any digging in.

Overall wearing experience was excellent. These opaques are lovely and smooth on the skin.

The Lycra/Elastane 3D knitting definitely contributes to the comfort of these tights. It enables them to stretch both vertically and horizontally (3D elasticity), and provides a soft feel and even appearance.

Colour range

The Tights Club 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights are available in Black only.

Price and availability

The Tights Club 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights are priced at £14.00

Shipping is free on all orders (The Tights Club currently only ship to the United Kingdom). There is a 15% discount when purchasing more than two pairs.

Conclusion

First impressions of The Tights Club 80 Denier Recycled Opaque Tights were really positive. You can tell a lot of effort has gone into the design and the 3D knitting spec. All of this has benefits for the final product which is great to wear.

The availability of six sizing options will appeal to many taller and larger guys.

Top marks also for the mailing envelopes which are made from recycled cardboard and have been certified plastic free. The Tights Club still have their recycling scheme for customers who want to have their (clean!) used tights recycled.

Reviewed: Sheer Tights By Threads

Hosiery brand Threads recently sent us their Opaque Tights and Sheer Tights to trial and review.

You can read our recent review of the the Threads Opaque Tights.

You can also read Part One and Part Two of our recent conversation with Xenia Chen, the founder of Threads. Part Two covers the plans of Threads to launch a new style of tights for men. You can now join the waitlist for Threads for Men and be the first to know when they they are launched.

Threads tights are extremely popular with guys. For lots of feedback on Threads tights from their many male customers check out their videos here and here.

We now focus on the Threads Sheer Tights.

This is how Threads describe their Sheer Tights:

"Our 20 denier tights. A wardrobe staple. What's more classic than a pair of black sheer tights? Whether it's with your favorite sweater dress, dress suit for work or go-to Saturday night outfit, our Sheer tights in black are extremely versatile and goes well with outfits from day to night. Made in Italy."

Packaging

The Threads Sheer Tights are simply packaged. The tights are folded around a plain white card and then enclosed in a cellophane envelope. It is closed with a Threads sticker that identifies the size.

Materials and features

The Threads Sheer Tights are 20 Denier and made in Italy, which is a sign of the brand's aspiration to provide quality hosiery. The yarn is 81% Polyamide and 19% Elastane.

Threads describe the yarn used as 'microfiber double-covered yarn', which has been designed for enhanced comfort, and is also less likely to produce static and stick to one's clothes.

The sheer tights felt really soft as I took them out of the packaging. A good sign was the generous leg length, which Threads describe as "enhanced", to avoid the "double crotch" effect of tights that are too small.

These tights are not sheer to waist. There is a brief made out of much denser and more opaque yarn that is designed to hug you and provide a lift to the bottom.

The brief measures 28cm from the top of the waistband to the crotch.

The rear of the brief has two panels that are designed to fit the buttocks and sculpt and lift them.

Seams are flat. There is a gusset for improved comfort and fit.

The waistband is just under 5cm wide and very stretchy.

The feet are boarded (shaped) and toes are reinforced.

Sizing, fit and wearing experience

The Threads Sheer Tights are available in four sizes:

A
B
C
D

I wore a Size D.

When putting them on you need to ensure that they are the right way round so that the two panels in the rear of the brief are aligned over the buttocks. The legs go on nice and easily, but you will find that the brief has quite a lot of elasticity. It stretches really well and once in place will really hug you in that area. It's very much a control brief, which may not be to everyone's taste. I found it provided firm but not uncomfortable support. In fact, after wearing for some time you don't notice the compression.

What the brief does do very well is keep the tights in place all day without the need for pulling up and adjusting. It stretches easily above the waist, hips and navel.

Fit on the leg was excellent with a consistent 20 Denier coverage. There is a light sheen rather than any over-noticeable shine.

I loved the smooth, sensual feel on the leg. Under trousers the glide was excellent.

Colour range

The Threads Sheer Tights are available in five colours:

Ivory

Tan

Caramel

Espresso

Black

I wore them in the Black shade.

Price and availability

The Threads Sheer Tights are priced at $14.00 (USD) and $18.00 (CAD).

There is free shipping on orders over $29 USD / $39 CAD.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed trying out the Threads Sheer Tights. What stands out more than anything else is how comfortable they feel when worn; this is a common thread in all the feedback from Threads male customers.

It's always good to have tights with a really deep brief, being a feature that suits the shape of many guys very well. It will be interesting to see what modifications Threads might make for the forthcoming Threads for Men tights. Will there be a pouch or front panel feature to support the male anatomy further? We will have to wait and see. You will definitely read about the new Threads for Men here as soon as they are released.

The Threads Sheer Tights are very good value for just $14.00 USD. The range of five nude skin tones is a further positive.

Reviewed: Wolford Haven Tights

Hosiery retailer Leglicious recently sent us a pair of the Wolford Haven Tights to trial and review.

You can still read our interview with Nicola Forkes, managing director Leglicious.

Packaging

The Wolford Haven Tights are packaged in light card box measuring 24cm x 17cm x 2.5cm. The box is closed with two flaps and a 'quality checked' sticker.

Inside the tights are wrapped around a card rectangle, and then enclosed in tissue paper printed with the Wolford logo.

Materials and features

The Wolford Haven Tights are 60 denier, and made from 92% Polyamid and 8% Elastane.

As can be seen in the pictures, these tights make quite a statement! The key feature is the ribbed Jacquard pattern that provides a two-tone effect in the
Carmine/Black colour combination.

Appearance is matte with no shine.

The brief measures 21cm from the waistband to the crotch, where there is a gusset. Seams are flat and expertly engineered.

The waistband is 2.5cm wide and has a Wolford tag sewn inside.

Toes are rounded and without reinforcement.

Sizing, fit and wearing experience

The Wolford Haven Tights are available in four sizes:
  • S
  • L
  • XL

I wore them in the XL size.

These tights are extraordinarily soft against the skin. They really feel quite luxurious.

Sizing in XL, as always with Wolford was just perfect.

Fit on the leg was exceptional with no wrinkling. The opaque coverage was quite dense for 60 denier. These tights are really quite stretchy, but even in areas like the thigh and calves, the pattern and coverage isn't impaired.

The brief and waistband are also very comfortable. There is plenty of room here for guys, and the waistband stretches well above the hips and waist. Although the waistband is relatively narrow compared with what Wolford are now providing in some of their redesign and relaunched classic products, it holds everything up well without constriction or any discomfort.

Colour range

At Leglicious, the Wolford Haven Tights are available in the Camine/Black combination.

A Black/White version is also available directly from Wolford

Price and availability

The Wolford Haven Tights are available at Leglicious for £29.00.

Conclusion

I absolutely loved these Haven Tights. They are so comfortable that you might not want to take them off.

They are up to the usual Wolford top quality. A lovely design, a perfect fit and an enjoyable wearing experience.

I wouldn't mind getting hold of the Black/White version now too to add to my Wolford collection.

Do also check out the men's tights selection at Leglicious, where you can find several styles in the Emilio Cavallini mantyhose range.
