Spotlight on ManStrumpor

I have featured a number of UK-based hosiery retailers at Hosiery For Men. It's quite a long list now and includes:

Eve's Legwear
Itsocks
TheTightSpot.com
thelegstore.co.uk
Tights Please
UK Tights

Although these retailers generally sell tights made for women, they also cater for male customers by selling brands that provide a good fit for men (such as Falke and Wolford) or styles available in larger sizes. Some also sell tights specifically made for men, like the soon to be discontinued Gerbe brand.

I feel it's time to provide some coverage of those retailers that sell tights designed specifically for men. There are several prominent brands now, including Adrian, Activskin, Doyeah, ELA and TIM Legwear.

We will start with ManStrumpor, a retailer based in Sweden. Magnus, the owner of ManStrumpor, has kindly agreed to be interviewed by Hosiery For Men.

Can you tell Hosiery For Men readers a bit about ManStrumpor?

ManStrumpor is a shop that is constantly evolving. My vision is to create a store that can provide everything from ordinary socks to tights for men.

Why did you set up an online business selling tights and other hosiery to men?

It was the best way to reach out to as many people as possible and there was nobody else who did it here in Scandinavia.

Is the trend of men buying tights for themselves a well-established trend in Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia, or is it still developing?

I am getting new customers all the time. It feels like it is becoming more and more common.

What do you feel are the advantages of tights that are made specifically for men?

I do not think there is any real difference. Some tights made for men have a fly opening, but for my part, it does not matter. Some tights made for women can provide just as good a fit, but of course one must choose those that fit well and are not too low in the waist, for example.

One important difference is that men's tights are packaged differently. I think it's important to have a male image on the tights packaging.

Which styles of tights or brands are particularly popular with ManStrumpor customers?

We sell a wide variety of brands at ManStrumpor. In general, sheer tights are the most popular. However, in colder months, such as now, sales of thicker tights increase.

Our best sellers are currently tights made by Doyeah and Comfilon (Activskin).

What can we expect in the future at ManStrumpor? Are you planning to expand the range of brands you stock?

The site is developing all the time. I'm soon going to be selling casual, self-designed socks.

Do you provide a service for customers outside Sweden?

Yes, of course. I sell worldwide. Details of shipping to European countries and countries outside Europe can be found on the ManStrumpor site.

Magnus - many thanks for the interview and your time. I wish ManStrumpor further success and I hope Hosiery For Men readers will take a look at the shop.

Just arrived: Falke Pure Matt 50 Tights

At Hosiery For Men we have recently featured the UK-based hosiery retailer TheTightSpot.com. They have kindly sent me a pair of the Falke Pure Matt 50 Opaque Tights for review.

I will review the Falke Matt 50 Tights shortly.

Reviewed: Penti 250 Denier Angora and Wool Tights

Here is a further review of one of the products sent to me for evaluation by the Turkish hosiery manufacturer Penti.

On Hosiery for Men you can read a profile of Penti as well as reviews of the following products:

Penti 80 Denier Micro Opaque Tights

Penti 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights

Penti Micro 100 Denier Tights

200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights

We now turn our attention to the 250 Denier Angora and Wool Mix Tights.

Materials and features

The 250 Denier Angora and Wool Mix Tights are part of Penti's Classic range.

Penti describe these tights as "Angora, wool mix soft tights." First impressions are positive: the fabric used is indeed very soft. On removal from the packaging it was also clear that these tights are quite generously sized.

The fabric used is 55% polyacrylic, 28% nylon, 10% merino wool, 4% Angora and 3% elastane.

These tights have the classic look of wool tights. The weave density is quite similar to both the Penti 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights and 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights.

They are sheer to waist, with a cotton gusset and flat seams. The waistband is 2cm wide, and with excellent elasticity. The brief section has good depth.

Despite only having 3% elastane (lycra) these tights have a very decent amount of stretch.

In appearance they are almost completely matt, with just a very slight sheen from the elastane yarn. As with the 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights, they look similar to black wool socks when worn under trousers.

Fit and sizing

The 250 Denier Angora and Wool Mix Tights are available in just three sizes: 1 (small), 2 (medium), and 3 (large).

I tested the size 3 (large). The fit was absolutely perfect in every respect. The brief is really comfortable and there is is plenty of stretch. In comparison with the Penti 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights and the 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights, I would say that these have been the best fit for me of all the three styles.

These are warm, opaque tights but they don't overheat. The weave density allows the legs to breathe and I found them to be really comfortable during a whole day of wear. They are like wearing a soft, comfortable pair of wool socks, except of course they are not socks! Tights provide a whole range of additional benefits.

After testing for a second day, I did notice that there was a small amount of pilling of the fabric in those areas where there has been the most wear - the feet and thighs. This is quite common with tights made with a high wool content.

Colour range

The 250 Denier Angora and Wool Mix Tights are available in three shades:

  • Chestnut
  • Black
  • Anthracite
I tested a pair in black.

Price and availability

The 250 Denier Angora and Wool Mix Tights cost 19.90TL (Turkish Lira). Converted at today's exchange rate this is

£7.17
$11.34
€8.62

When sold in Penti stores outside of Turkey, prices are likely to be higher.

Penti tights are available from their Turkish stores and their network of international outlets.

The Penti store in the USA, is at 9 JFK Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. They can be contacted via the Penti USA website.

If are a Turkish resident, Penti hosiery can be purchased via the Penti online shop.

For other enquiries about purchasing and shipping it is best to contact Penti directly.

Conclusion

Once again, I have to conclude that Penti have made another very good quality product with the 250 Denier Angora and Wool Mix Tights. The sizing is very accurate and this style has the features I particularly look for: a generous brief and good stretch.

Reviewed: Penti Cashmere & Vicose 200 Denier Tights

With this review I am now half way through testing the package of samples sent to me by Penti.

On Hosiery for Men you can read a profile of Penti as well as reviews of the following products:

Penti 80 Denier Micro Opaque Tights

Penti 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights

Penti Micro 100 Denier Tights

This review is of the 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights.

Materials and features

The 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights are part of Penti's Classic range.

Penti describe these tights as "thick, 200 denier tights, made of a cashmere and viscose blend."

The fabric used is 70% viscose, 18% nylon, 8% cashmere and 4% elastane. This is the information on the packaging; the information on the Penti website is slightly different: 4% cashmere and 8% elastane.

These tights feel similar to the 250 Denier Naturel Sensation Tights. In appearance they look quite like wool tights, with a similar, less dense weave.

They are sheer to waist, with a cotton gusset and flat seams. The waistband is 2cm wide, and with good elasticity. The brief section has good depth.

The viscose and cashmere mix means the tights are very soft to the touch. They are warm but with good breathability.

In appearance they are almost completely matt, with just a very slight sheen from the elastane (lyrcra) yarn. When worn under trousers they look similar to black wool socks.

Fit and sizing

The 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights are available in just three sizes : 1 (small), 2 (medium), and 3 (large).

I tested the size 3 (large). As with the Penti 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights, I was initially concerned that the size 3 might not be large enough, although one can see that according to the size chart this size does accommodate sizes up to 185cm. (about 6'0").

The size 3 did fit comfortably but needed just a bit of stretching. I am not sure this size would be such a good fit for a taller person.

Colour range

The 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights are available in three shades:
  • Chestnut
  • Black
  • Anthracite
I tested a pair in black.

Price and availability
The 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights cost 26.90TL (Turkish Lira), making them one of the most expensive styles in the Penti range. Converted at today's exchange rate this is:

£9.75
$15.30
€11.60

When sold in Penti stores outside of Turkey, prices are likely to be higher. For example, the recently reviewed Penti 80 Denier Micro Opaque Tights are priced at 9.50TL on the Penti website (approximately US$5.20), but are sold for $18.50 in the Penti store in the USA.

Conclusion

The 200 Denier Cashmere and Viscose Tights are soft, warm opaque tights. The cashmere content provides an additional degree of comfort: these tights feel wonderful on the skin.

Like all the Penti styles tested so far they are robustly constructed and I am sure they would wear well.

Reviewed: Cecilia de Rafael Zafiro 60 Opac Plus Tights

I recently wrote a profile of the Spanish hosiery manufacturer Cecilia de Rafael.

Cecilia de Rafael have sent me a number of samples of their opaque tights for review. The first style I have tested is the Zafiro 60 Opac Plus tights.

Materials and features

The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus tights are part of the Cecilia de Rafael Clásicos range.

First impressions are very positive. The material is beautifully soft and stretchy, and these are clearly a high quality product.

The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus are 60 denier opaque tights made with Lycra 3D. The fabric used is 80% polyamide and 20% elastane (Lycra).

Lycra 3D hosiery contains Lycra fibre in every stitch of every row. This high Lycra fibre content gives fabric exceptional elasticity and clings to the legs like a second skin, with no sagging or wrinkling.

The Zafiro 60 tights are completely sheer to waist and have well-constructed flat seams throughout. The waistband is about 1.5cm wide and is soft and comfortable.

In the size 5 that I tested, there is a rear comfort panel. Sizes 1-4 have a cotton gusset.

These tights are matt in appearance, with just a hint of a sheen.

Opacity is even, although not total. Where the fabric is more stretched, such as at the knees and thighs the appearance changes to that of a 40 or 50 denier opaque.

Fit and sizing

The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus tights are available in five sizes: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

As I mentioned in the recent Cecilia de Rafael profile, the size 5 is welcome for men who may need a size that can accommodate a taller height.

I tested the size 5 and the fit was very good indeed. The tights have plenty of stretch and the brief also has plenty of depth.

The 3D Lycra ensured the tights fitted closely and there was no bunching or wrinkling. The high Lycra content also helped these tights to stay in place; they needed very little pulling up or adjusting during a whole day of wear.

The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus are not very thick opaque tights and they were a really comfortable wear under jeans on a cold February day. Despite being matt opaques the glide under trousers was very good.

Colour range
The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus are available in eight shades:
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Chocolate
  • Anthracite
  • Amethyst
  • Lapislazuli
  • Bordeaux
  • Khaki
I tested a pair in chocolate.

Price and availability

The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus tights are usually sold for around €12.50, although this may vary depending on retail outlet.

Cecilia de Rafael tights are available from several retailers including UK Tights, Shapings, Hosieree and Hosieria.

Conclusion
This is the first time I have tested and reviewed Cecilia de Rafael tights. The Zafiro 60 Opac Plus tights are a high quality product and the attention to detail in their manufacture is evident in every aspect. They would be a good choice for wear on cooler days; they provide a layer of insulation but are also very comfortable.

I am definitely a convert to tights made with Lycra 3D yarn - the fabric is exceptionally comfortable and the fit excellent.

Reviewed: Penti Micro 100 Denier Tights

I am now part way through a series of product review of Penti tights. Penti are a hosiery manufacturer from Turkey and you can read a more detailed profile of them on this blog.

I have recently reviewed the Penti 80 Denier Micro Opaque Tights and Penti 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights.

We now consider the 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights.

Materials and features

Like the 250 Denier Premier Naturel Sensation Tights and the Penti 80 Denier Micro Opaque Tights , the 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights are part of Penti's Classic range.

Penti describe these tights as 'glossy, opaque tights produced with 3D technology."

The fabric used is 90% polyamide and 10% elastane.

One can feel the quality of the material as soon as these tights are removed from the packaging. It feel soft to the touch and has a satin sheen. Although quite shiny in the light, they are not over glossy in appearance.

The 100 Denier Micro Tights are completely sheer to waist, with no demarcation between the leg and the brief.

Seams are flat throughout and there is a cotton gusset. An interesting feature is the 6cm wide waistband: this was very comfortable indeed and helped the tights stay up.

Fit and sizing

The 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights are available in four sizes in the Black and Chestnut shades: 1 (small), 2 (medium), 3 (large) and 4 (extra large)

For other shades, sizes 1- 3 only are available.

I tested the size 4 (extra large). They were initially a bit of a challenge to get on: the close weave of the material and the high level of elastane (lyrca) means they were actually quite tight. There was plenty of stretch however, and once on, the fit was very snug and comfortable.

When worn the 100 Denier Micro feel rather like support or low compression tights. The level of compression provides a number of benefits if worn all day and also means that the tights stay in position. Glide under trousers was excellent.

The sizing, as with all Penti styles tested so far, is accurate. These tights would stretch further for a person taller than my 5'10".

I wore these tights several times during the extremely cold spell. The insulation was excellent, but the Micro 100s might be a little too warm for wear under trousers in warmer weather.

Colour range
The 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights are available in five shades:
  • Grey
  • Chestnut
  • Black
  • Dark Blue
  • Anthracite
I tested a pair in black.

Price and availability

The 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights cost 11.90TL (Turkish Lira). Converted at today's exchange rate this is:

£4.30
$6.75
€5.18

When sold in Penti stores outside of Turkey, prices are likely to be higher. For example, the recently reviewed Penti 80 Denier Micro Opaque Tights are priced at 9.50TL on the Penti website (approximately US$5.20), but are sold for $18.50 in the Penti store in the USA. Thanks to Hosiery For Men reader Matt for checking this price.

I estimate that the price of the 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights will be around the $20 mark.

This puts them very much in the medium-high price bracket, but the quality is excellent.

Conclusion
The 100 Denier Micro Opaque Tights are excellent quality and once again I was impressed with the robust construction, accurate sizing and great fit. Like both Penti styles tested and reviewed previously, the Micro 100s have a generous brief and this makes them a good choice for male buyers.

They have a fair amount of shine, but when worn under jeans or trousers, this is obviously less noticeable. The slightly glossy appearance also means that the glide is good when worn under trousers.

Profile: Cecilia de Rafael

Cecilia de Rafael is a leading European hosiery manufacturer. Established in 1976, they focus on the production of tights and other hosiery in the medium-high quality range.

Cecila de Rafael's central manufacturing hub is based near Barcelona, Spain. Here they aim to use the most advanced ecological materials in creating, dyeing and finishing their products.

They are currently a leading brand in the Spanish market and more than 15 countries worldwide.

The full range of Cecilia de Rafael tights can be viewed on their website. There are an impressive range of opaque styles. For male wearers, two positive features stand out: the availability of many styles in a size 5 (extra large) which caters for heights up to 190cm (6'2"), and the wide variety of dark and neutral shades.

In recent years, they have further expanded their product line by releasing a more youth-oriented brand, Samburu.

Cecilia de Rafael do not currently manufacturer tights made especially for men, however my conversations with them indicate that they are interested in increasing awareness of their range of opaque tights and exploring possibilities of developing this segment of the market.

Cecilia de Rafael have kindly sent me three styles to test and review. These are:
The Zafiro 60 Denier Opac Plus tights.

The Ave 70 Denier opaque tights.

The Coral 60 Denier opaque tights.

Cecilia de Rafael tights are available from several retailers including UK Tights, Shapings, Hosieree and Hosieria.

Just arrived: Comfort4Men 80 Denier Opaque Men's Tights

I have already written two features on Comfort4Men tights for men on Hosiery For Men.

I reviewed the 60 Denier Luxury men's Tights and the 70 Denier Opaque Tights. Both are superb quality.

I have now been sent a further Comfort4Men style for review; this time the 80 Denier Opaque Tights. I will review these soon.

Reviewed: Cette Dublin 60 Denier Opaque Tights

Cette are a leading Belgian hosiery manufacturer. The factory was founded in 1958 in a small village in Flanders, 30 km from Brussels. Cette is a high quality, premium hosiery brand and is available across Europe, as well as in Russia and Japan.

The Cette Dublin 60 Denier Opaque Tights are part of the Cette 'Classic' range of tights.

I was sent a pair of these tights for review by thelegstore.co.uk. You can read still the recent Hosiery for Men feature on this retailer.

Materials and features

The Cette Dublin 60 Denier Opaque Tights have a very satin, soft texture which one notices as soon as they are removed from the packaging. The microfibre fabric is made from 93% polyamide, 6% elastane and 1% cotton.

These tights are sheer to waist, have flat seams and a cotton gusset.

The waistband is a wide 4.5cm and is supported with a slightly larger reinforcement band below. This makes the tights very comfortable to wear and holds them up well.

The brief section is quite deep and generous and there were no difficulties in stretching it over my waist.

In appearance the Cette Dublin tights are almost completely matt. There is a good density of colour, although they are not completely opaque in areas where the fabric might be slightly more stretched, such as the knees and thighs.

Fit and sizing

These tights are available in small, medium and large.

I tested the large size. The sizing information states that these would suite a height of up to 5'11". This appears more or less accurate; I found that for my height (5'10") the fit was good but I am not sure if they would have stretched a great deal further for a taller person.

Colour range

At thelegstore.co.uk the Cette Dublin tights are available in:
  • Black
  • Cocoa
  • Blue-Black
  • Purple-Black
I tested a pair in black.

A wider range of colours may be available from other retailers. The Cette website indicates that they are manufactured in 12 shades.

Price and availability

At most retailers these tights are available at around the £9.00 - £11.00 mark.

At thelegstore.co.uk they are currently available at £7.50.

thelegstore.co.uk have offered Hosiery For Men readers a 10% discount on any orders. Simply enter the code HFM109112 when prompted at the online checkout. This code will be valid for the whole of 2012.

Conclusion

The Cette Dublin tights are very well made. The attention to detail, such as the very comfortable waistband, is impressive. They are not thick, heavy opaque tights, and are probably better for wear on cool days. The glide under trousers and jeans is very good, and they will provide a nice extra layer of insulation. I can see why these tights have been a best seller with male customers at many online retailers. However, if you are taller than 5'10" they are probably not the best option.

Reviewed: Gatta Rosalia Polar Winter Tights

It was another bitterly cold morning in London today. I knew I was going to need some really thick and warm tights for proper insulation.

Itsocks recently send me a sample of the Gatta Rosalia 600 Denier Polar Winter Tights and this looked a good day to test them.

I recently wrote a feature on Itsocks. It includes an interview with the owner Anna Oldbury.

Itsocks are a London-based hosiery retailer and are increasing their range of styles in larger sizes to cater for their growing market of men buying tights for themselves. Itsocks now has a tights for men section on their website.

Materials and features

It's clear that the Rosalia 600 Denier Polar Winter Tights are going to be something different when you see the packaging, which clearly contains a product that is much thicker and bulkier that normal opaque tights.

According to the packaging are 600 denier tights, designed for wear in cold temperatures. The tights they feel very soft to the touch and are not as heavy as you expect. The tights look very opaque but, from what I can see, are not made of 600 denier yarn. The appearance is closer to 200 denier tights that are made from cotton or a wool/cotton mix.

The outside of the tights has a smooth matt finish. Inside, the tights are made with a micro-fleece fabric. The material used is 100% polyester.

These tights are sheer to waist, apart from a reinforcement band at the top of the legs. The legs are straight and the flat seams are well made.

The size 5 (X-large) I tested have a comfort panel at the from and the rear of the brief, making them actually very similar in construction to some styles of men's tights.

The brief is extremely generous and in the 5 (X-large) stretched far above my waist. The comfortable waistband is about 4cm wide and is made with a doubled over fold of the fabric.

Fit and sizing

The Rosalia 600 Denier Polar Winter Tights are available in four sizes: 2 (small), 3 (medium), 4 (large) and 5 (X-large).

I tested the size 5 (X-large) and they were a great fit. They would easily accommodate a person much taller than my 5'10". I think the size 4(large) would also been a good fit for me, perhaps a slightly snugger one.

These tights really do keep you warm. I am not sure if they would be such a great idea in cooler spring and autumn weather, but for very cold days, and outdoor work and activities they would be perfect.

Colour range

The Rosalia 600 Denier Polar Winter Tights are available in two shades:
  • Nero (black)
  • Graffite (grey).
I tested a pair in black.

Price and availability

These tights normally retail for £11.35, but are currently on offer at Itsocks for just £6.99.

Conclusion

These are very warm, soft tights and are recommended for colder days. I can see why they are a best seller with male customers at Itsocks.

The sizing is very generous and I can't see any problem for men to get a good fit in the large and X-large sizes.

If you need any more information remember that the Itsocks website has a facility for customers to “chat to Anna”.
