Just arrived: Trasparenze Cortina 100 denier opaque tights

After an impressively quick delivery from Legs and Stockings, my Trasparenze Cortina 100 denier opaque tights arrived today.

I have already mentioned that these were a real bargain at just £4.95, as they sell at £10.00 to £12.00 everywhere else.

I will test and review these tights soon.

Can I wish all my readers a very happy new year. Also a big thanks to those manufacturers and retailers who have supported this blog with samples and other help. Special thanks to Tights Please, Eve's Legwear, Adrian, Lida, Philippe Matignon (US), Ufash and The Stylish Fox.

Reviewed: Pierre Mantoux Veloutine 70 Tights

I have never worn Pierre Mantoux tights before. I bought the Veloutine 70 Tights from UK Tights after reading their description:

"Unlike any other opaque tights you may have worn before, I promise, you'll not want to take these off at the end of the day."

Materials and features

Pierre Mantoux tights are made in Italy and that is usually, in my experience, a sign that the quality will be excellent.

The tights felt quite light when I took them out of the packaging, but the quality of the fabric was noticeable immediately.

The fabric used in these tights is 96% Nylon and 4% Elastane. They have flat seams. The Size IV/XL size that I bought has a rear comfort panel. The waistband is soft and comfortable. The tights are sheer to waist with no demarcation between the legs and brief area.

Fit and sizing

These tights come in five sizes:

O
I/Small
II/Medium
III/Large
IV/XL

I tested the IV/XL size which, as can been seen on the size chart, goes up to 6'00".

The fit was really good. They have plenty of stretch and gave a good even opaque coverage. The brief section seemed to lack some depth but stretched well and fitted comfortably over my waist. This is often an issue when men buy tights designed for women. I like tights that will at least fit slightly above the waist level of my jeans or trousers and in this respect the Veloutine 70 tights worked well for me.

I very much liked the matte appearance of the fabric, which makes these tights good for 'stealth' wear under trousers. The fabric is amazingly soft and smooth.

Colour range
These tights are available in Black, Blue, Chocolate and and Anthracite. I tested a pair in Chocolate, my preferred shade at the moment.

Price and availability
These tights normally cost £18.95, but are currently available at a special offer price of £16.95 from UK Tights.

Conclusion
These tights are quite expensive. At getting on for £20.00 they are in the same price bracket as hosiery from Falke and Wolford. Is the price justified? In terms of quality, comfort and fit I would say they are good value. I tested the pair I bought three times and I really enjoyed the feel and comfort they provided.

However, I have recently bought and tested both the Wolford OPAQUE 70 Tights and Falke Pure Matt 100 Tights and for me, both of these styles just shade it ahead of the Pierre Mantoux. I would give the highest possible rating to the Wolford and Falke tights and at present I can't see beyond them for quality and, particularly as a man, the fantastic fit. This is not to knock the Pierre Mantoux tights - they are great quality, available in larger sizes and fit well. I would be more than happy to wear these regularly and hope to try more of the Pierre Mantoux range, including the Veloutine 100 Tights.

Sales bargains from Legs and Stockings

This is always a good time of year to bag some hosiery bargains, with almost all the major online retailers having sales.

Here are my picks from the Legs and Stockings website. They are a new retailer to me and they have some great bargains.

I have just bought some Trasparenze Cortina Matt Opaque Tights for just £4.95. They usually retail at between £11.00 to £13.00. I just bought a pair in Size 4 which goes up to 6'1". These are 100 denier so are perfect for this time of year. I will review these tights after I have tested them.

From the same seller there are also a range of Levante tights on special offer, including the Levante Airskin Ultra Opaque 150 Denier Tights which I have previously reviewed on this blog.

The Cette Dublin Classic Opaque Tights are also available at a great price - £6.75. Sizes go up to 5'11".

Delivery at Legs and Stockings is just £0.99.

Just arrived: Comfort4Men 60 denier luxury tights for men

Last month I posted my first review of Comfort4Men tights for men. I tested the 70 denier opaque tights. This review attracted almost a record number of page views.

Comfort4Men have now sent me a different model for review - the 60 denier luxury tights.

After reading the news that Gerbe might be discontinuing their range of men's tights, it is great that there are retailers like Comfort4Men who are still committed to providing quality hosiery for men.

Gerbe tights for men discontinued?

It was really disappointing to read today that it looks like Gerbe are going discontinue their range of tights for men.

I have previously blogged about the superb quality of Gerbe men's tights here and here.

I will be contacting Gerbe to see if this can be confirmed.

Pierre Mantoux Veloutine 70 Tights

I recently decided to try a hosiery brand that was new to me - Pierre Mantoux. Their tights come very highly recommended by UK Tights.

I took advantage of a special offer on the Veloutine 70 Tights. I have been wearing these this week and they are excellent. A review will be posted shortly.

UK Tights stocks a wide range of Pierre Mantoux tights which you can view on their website.

Reviewed: Gipsy 300 denier tights

Gipsy Tights are one of the most common brands of tights in the UK. It is common see them on sale both in high street stores and in more specialist fashion shops, as well as corner shops and pharmacies. Gipsy tights are not high end hosiery, but good value everyday tights. The breadth of their range is pretty impressive.

I have been testing a pair of Gipsy 300 Denier Tights.

Materials and features

These Italian-made  300 denier tights come in a card enclosure. As soon as you take the tights out of the packaging you can feel the weight of the fabric. These are some serious opaque tights for cold weather wear.

The fabric used in these tights is 96% Nylon and 4% Elastane.

The fabric is soft and comfortable. There are conventional seams and no gusset. The waistband is about 3cm wide and also very comfortable.

These tights are very opaque with even coverage throughout when worn. The appearance is very matt and therefore they are great for wearing instead of socks.

Fit and sizing

The tights come in five sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. I tested the Large size which, as can been seen on the size chart, goes up to 5'10".

The fit was excellent for me, but I don't think the large size would stretch much further for anyone above 5'10".

The brief/panty area could also have been a little more accommodating - I would like a little more depth in the brief with the waist coming up slightly higher.

The tights stay up really well and don't need pulling up frequently. I wore them to work under trousers for a whole day and the they stayed in place.

Colour range
These tights are available in Black, Steel (Grey) and Brown. I tested a pair in Black.

Price and availability

These tights cost £8.50.

They are available to purchase online from the Gipsy website. Shipping is an additional £1.95.

Gipsy tights are also available very widely from many retail outlets. The Gipsy website provides a useful Find A Store search facility.

Conclusion

These are really thick, warm tights and are perfect in cold weather. They would fit men well who are up to 5' 10" in height. It would great if Gipsy offered an Extra Tall size - not just for men but also for taller women.

Friday 9 December 2011

Just arrived: Gipsy 300 den opaque tights

Gipsy Tights have kindly sent me a pair of their 300 Denier Tights.

These tights look and feel really thick and warm, which is great given how cold it has become in the UK over the last few days.

I will be testing these tights soon and a review will follow.

Reviewed: Wolford OPAQUE 70 tights

I have blogged previously about the fantastic quality of the Wolford OPAQUE 70 tights. I recently purchased a pair in the recent Tights Please sale, after previously buying several pairs from the Wolford Partner Boutique in London.

These tights are not available all year round. They are a seasonal special and luckily they are still available for a limited period.

Materials and features

These tights are 92% Polyamide and 8% Elastane.

The quality of the fabric is noticeable as soon as you take them out of the packaging. They feel very soft and have a matt appearance.

They have flat seams and a gusset. The waistband isn't very wide but is more than confortable.
The tights are very opaque with an even appearance throughout when worn.

The matt appearance means that the tights can easily pass for socks if wearing under jeans or trousers.

Fit and sizing
The tights come in five sizes: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large.

I always buy Wolford tights in Extra Large and the fit is superb. I especially like the generous size of the brief, which sits comfortably above the waist.

Colour range
These tights are available in Black, Mocca (dark brown) and Anthracite (dark grey).

Price and availability
These tights cost £16.00 from the Wolford Partner Boutique in London, with free same day UK shipping.
They are also available from Tights Please for £14.99 plus shipping.

Conclusion
The Wolford OPAQUE 70 are some of the best opaque tights I have bought. They are very warm, and glide well under trousers. They are a great alternative to traditional long johns, which are so bulky and uncomfortable. Like all Wolford tights, these wear very well and are durable. The price is reasonable and also represents a considerable saving on the Wolford Velvet De Luxe 66 tights.

Reviewed: Comfort4Men 70 Denier Men's Opaque Tights

I was recently kindly provided with a sample pair of the Comfort4Men men's tights from Germany.

I would say that the thought and care which has gone into the design and production of these tights is remarkable. It is clear that every detail has been considered, to ensure that the final product is one that is perfectly adapted for the male anatomy. The health and wellbeing needs of men buying these tights have also been considered.

The Comfort4Men website provides some interesting background information about why their men's tights were developed:

"I worked in the fashion branch for many years and was always surprised that fashion and health care products such as support tights were only ever made for women. Support stockings and support tights would also help men to get through the day more comfortably if they have to sit or stand.

My story begins with a relative who suffered a serious thrombosis. From this point on he needed to wear medical compression tights. As no difference in fit was made between women and men, they were very uncomfortable to wear, particularly in the genital region. Up to this point in time apparently no-one had troubled to find a solution for this problem. This was the basis for my idea.

Tights are ‘unisex’. Although in the world of fashion women have ‘taken over’ tights, they were originally exclusively men’s clothing. Today there is no reason why a man should not wear tights."

Another unique feature of Comfort4Men is that you can 'individually design' your tights using features from several variants. As you can see in the picture below, you can choose between 40, 60, 70, 80 and 140 denier, as well as a choice of compression support. There are also low and high waist options and a choice of shades. Not only that, there is also a choice of gusset colour and whether you want a fly opening or not.

It is really laudable that a manufacturer has shown such a commitment to the men's tights market.

It was quite a task to choose a pair of these tights to review but I eventually went for the C405M model:

  • 70 denier
  • High waist
  • Dark brown
  • Black gusset
  • No fly opening

Materials and features
The tights I tested are 70 denier but looked more like 80 denier. They are very (but not totally) opaque but not very heavy or too hot to wear. They are made from 90% Polyamide and 10% Elastane. The material is extremely soft.

The tights have an extremely comfortable 4cm waistband. The toe is reinforced and has a comfortable flat seam.

The gusset, crotch area has a flat seam and is made from very soft, comfortable material. This area also stretches to accommodate the male anatomy. A rear comfort panel also provides further comfort and ensure the tights fit well.

When worn the tights have a very slight sheen.

Fit and sizing
The tights come in three sizes: 4, 5 and 6.

I am 5' 10" and tested a pair in size 6.

The fit was perfect. I have worn these tights on several occasions now and they are incredibly comfortable. In fact, they are so comfortable that when I put them on I feel as if I have a pair of bespoke tights that have been personally designed just for me.

The high Elastane content means that they cling extremely well to the legs and don't need pulling up during the day. They glide well under trousers.

Colour range

The 70 denier opaque tights are available six colours: Black, Dark Brown, Indigo, Kobalt, Natur and Navy.

Price and availability

These tights cost €38.80 plus shipping. For non-European countries the price is €32.61. Shipping rates vary depending on the destination.

Conclusion

Despite their relatively high cost I would give these tights the highest recommendation. The care that has gone into their design has paid off and these are genuinely tights made for men, as opposed to some brands of 'unisex' tights. They are robustly made and will last for a long time so one would get plenty of wear out of them.

The price of these tights is comparable to the men's tights made by Gerbe. I would say they are as good as Gerbe if not better. If you are a man and haven't worn tights before, try these and you will be converted immediately.

Reviewed: Philippe Matignon 'Dorella' semi-opaque tights

I have blogged before about the excellent quality tights made by Philippe Matignon. What you can be sure of when buying Philippe Matignon tights is that the quality will be excellent and you will be getting a top class product.

As a man buying tights for himself I am always looking for a product that fits well, is durable and comfortable. I discovered Philippe Matignon tights when visiting Spain where they are always stocked in the El Corte Inglés chain of department stores.

Philippe Matignon now have an online store and they kindly sent me a pair of Dorella 40 tights for review.

Materials and features

According to the packaging, these are '40 denier semi-opaque pantyhose'. They are made from 88% Polyamide, 9% Elastane and 3% Cotton.

The tights have a fully shaped leg and are sheer to waist. They have flat seams and a slightly reinforced toe.

The appearance is glossy but not excessively so. The fabric used is very high quality; soft but also strong and durable. These tights, like all those made by Philippe Matignon, will last and last.

Fit and sizing
The tights come in five sizes: 1, 2, 3, 4 and XL which has a rear panel.

I tested the XL size in Cognac, a warm tan colour.

The fit was superb: excellent length and a generous brief. I have worn these tights on three occasions now and was really impressed with how comfortable they are. The high Lycra content means that they cling well to the legs and hardly need any pulling up during the day. The gloss appearance also provides very good glide under trousers.

Colour range
These tights are available Cognac, Nero and Playa Nature.

Price and availability
These tights cost US$21.00 from the online store that now ships internationally.

Hosiery for Men has been offered a special discount code which I can share with you. To get an amazing 25% discount, use the code 'Press25' when purchasing through the Philippe Matignon online store.

Conclusion
I was very impressed with these tights and they met all of my requirements. They are perfect for cool days, when it is not so cold that one needs thicker opaque tights.

Spotlight on Eve's Legwear

I have already mentioned Eve's Legwear at Hosiery for Men and had remarked on their great customer service for men buying tights for themselves.

I am now pleased to publish an exclusive interview with Eve, the owner of  Eve's Legwear. Do check the Eve's Legwear website and get in touch if you have any hosiery needs you would like to discuss with Eve.

Why did you set up Eve's Legwear?
I used to work in a hosiery and leather department many moons ago and this is where my interest in and love of nylon first arose. I noticed that all the popular styles sold out as they hit the shelves and then customers would be left disappointed when they couldn't find the size, colour or style they required. It was at this time that the idea started to form. Being an avid lover of nylon, I became increasingly frustrated about not being able to find suitable hosiery on the high street. The feedback from others reflected my own experiences. Hence the creation of my web based business. It took the death of my Nan to spur me on and forge forward as she always believed in the concept in which I had created.

Are male customers buying for themselves an important part of your customer base? Do you welcome their custom at Eve's Legwear?
Here are
Eve's Legwear we have an increasing number of male customers. We welcome these customers and are currently extending our range to accommodate them. We are currently sourcing new products to add to our site. We have also taken advice from our male customers as what products they would like to see. To us, male customers are a very important part of our customer base, and are treated no different from any other customer.

Are there any particular styles of tights or brands that are popular with male customers?
In all honesty the styles vary across our whole range due to personal taste. Some male customers prefer the slightly thicker tights, whilst other prefer to wear sheers.

What kind of service will male customers receive at Eve's Legwear? Do you welcome enquiries and requests for advice?
We offer a discreet service at
Eve's Legwear. There is no company information on our packaging to ensure the contents are not known.

We always welcome enquiries from male customers and are always happy to receive feedback from them on how we can improve our service to them and we will happily take on board any comments and feedback they may have and accommodate these where possible.

What are your thoughts on men wearing tights?
Men have been wearing tights for centuries. In my opinion there is no reason why this should change. If a male chooses to wear tights it is his prerogative and he shouldn't be discriminated against for doing so. Men who wear tights come from all walks of life from the fishermen wanting to keep warm on the river bank to business suited executives. Each and everyone of them has a right to wear tights if that is their preference.

Many thanks Eve. We look forward to seeing the new products on the website. Thanks for your support for men who buy tights for themselves. It's great there are a growing number of retailers like Eve's Legwear who cater or us and value our custom.

Fibrotex: Men's tights from Germany

I have just become aware of a hosiery manufacturer in Germany, Fibrotex, who have a great selection of tights and footless tights for men.

I will try and provide more information shortly and hopefully review some of their products.

Reviewed: Ufash 60 Denier Opaque Unisex Tights

Ufash are a new range of unisex tights from Austria. I have already reviewed the:

Lucy & Luca 40 denier matt semi-opaque tights

Frida & Fred 20 denier semi-matt tights

Zara & Zac 100 denier opaque tights

This is my final Ufash review and today I am reviewing the Anna & Andy 60 denier opaque tights.

Materials and features

According to the packaging, these are 'semi-matt, opaque unisex microfibre tights' made from 16% Polyamide and 14% Elastane. The tights come in a transparent, resealable storage bag.

The tights have conventional seams and there is very slight demarcation in the material between the legs and the brief, but this is really not visible. As with Zara & Zac 100 denier opaque tights the waistband is rather narrow but not uncomfortable.

I found the material to be quite shiny; they are definitely more on the shiny side that matte.

Fit and sizing

The tights come in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large (a gusset) and XL which has a rear comfort panel.

I tested the XL size in Graphite (Grey). They fit extremely well and the high Lycra content means that they cling well to the legs and hardly need any pulling up during the day

The brief had plenty of room and was very comfortable.

Colour range

These tights are available Coffee (Dark Brown), Graphite (Dark Grey) and Black.

Price and availabilityThese tights cost €10.95 from Amazon Germany. They are also available in the UK from Legwear4Men for £9.49.

Conclusion

These are good quality tights - great fit, well-made and very comfortable under jeans or trousers. However, the price at nearly £10 does seem slightly high for what you are getting. For example, the excellent Marks & Spencer Autograph 60 Denier Velvet Touch Opaque Tights are cheaper and better quality, with flat seams and a comfort waistband. You can read my review here. For less than £6, the Charnos 60 Denier Opaque Tights are also great value.

Just arrived: Philippe Matignon 'Dorella' tights

I particularly like the Philippe Matignon brand which has a wide range of styles. The quality is superb and the fit always excellent.

Philippe Matignon now have an online store in the US and they have kindly send me a pair of Dorella 40 tights.

I will review these shortly and also write more about Philippe Matignon hosiery.

I will be wearing some opaque tights, and will tell my readers what they are tomorrow.

figleaves Sale

figleaves currently have a sale and male hosiery buyers might find a number of bargains there, especially if you are stocking up now with opaque tights for the colder weather.

figleaves have their own range of Italian Hosiery, all available at a generous discount.

I have previously bought their Velvet Opaque 50 denier tights. These are available in a two pack for £9.60 (normally £12.00). These tights have an amazing amount of stretch. They also feel great on the leg. I previously bought them in the Dark Brown colour but they are also available in Black.

Reviewed: Lida Man's World opaque men's tights

The Polish hosiery manufacturers Lida recently sent me a pair of their 100 denier Man's World opaque tights for review.

Materials and features
These are very opaque 100 denier tights made from 82% Microfibre and 18% Dorlastan.

It is clear that they have been manufactured to a very high quality. The tights have flat seams, a male centre panel and a well-designed fly opening. The brief is slightly reinforced as are the toes. There is quite a wide comfortable waistband.

The tights have a very slight sheen.

Fit and sizing

The tights are made in four sizes: M2, L3, XL4 and XXL5.

I tested size L3 and they just about fitted my 5'10" height comfortably. If I purchased these I would go for a size XL4 in future as the tights don't have a huge amount of stretch. However, they were a good fit; I just prefer a little more room.

Colour range
These tights are available in Black only.

Price and availability

These tights cost £9.99 at Legwear4Men.

Conclusion

These are really warm tights and would be excellent for cold days as an extra layer for insulation. The glide under trousers is very good. A top quality product.

Reviewed: Fiore Raisa 120 denier opaque tights

US-based hosiery retailer The Stylish Fox kindly sent me these Raisa 120 denier opaque tights for review.

The Stylish Fox is a young company, created with the goal of providing high-quality, fashionable hosiery at reasonable prices. They welcome male customers buying hosiery for themselves and you can also ask any questions via their Live Chat support facility.

The Raisa 120 denier opaque tights are made in Poland by Fiore.

Materials and features

These are very soft and very opaque 120 Denier tights that are very stretchy due to the high content of elastane (Lycra). The material is 81% Polyamide, 18% Elastane and 1% Cotton.

The stretchy quality of the material is clear as soon as you take these tights out of their packaging. The 3D technology used in the manufacture means the tights fit very closely to the legs and are extremely comfortable.

These tights are sheer to waist, have flat seams and invisibly reinforced toes, and a cotton gusset in sizes 3 and 4. They have a slight shine.

Fit and sizing

The tights are made in three sizes: 2, 3 and 4.

I tested size 4 in the Mocca shade and they fitted my 5'10" height comfortably. The brief was for me just a little lacking in depth.

Colour range

These tights are available in Black, Mocca, Navy Blue, Graphite and Plum.

Price and availability
These tights cost $13.60 at The Stylish Fox. They are also available from a UK retailer and if any readers are interested let me know via a comment and I will post the details.

Conclusion

I found these tights to be an extremely comfortable wear indeed. Under trousers they glide well and provide excellent warmth. Their stretchy quality means they would be a good choice for taller people. Thanks again to The Stylish Fox. Do visit their website and have a look at their range of products.

The Extra Large size is a great fit if you are taller. Slightly pricey some would say, but for the quality you get they are definitely worth it and will last for ages. Reviewed: Ufash 100 Denier Opaque Tights

Ufash are a new range of unisex tights from Austria. I have already reviewed the Lucy & Luca 40 denier matt semi-opaque tights and the Frida & Fred 20 denier semi-matt tights.

Today I am reviewing the Zara & Zac 100 denier opaque tights.

Materials and features

According to the packaging, these are 'semi-matt, opaque unisex microfibre tights' made from 95% Polyamide and 5% Elastane. The tights come in a transparent, resealable storage bag.

The tights have conventional seams and there is very slight demarcation in the material between the legs and the brief, but this is really not visible. The 2cm waistband is rather narrow but not uncomfortable.

Fit and sizing

The tights come in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large (a gusset) and XL which has a rear comfort panel.

I tested the XL size and the fit was really excellent. The brief had plenty of room and was very comfortable.

Colour range

These tights are available in Black only.

Price and availability

These tights cost €11.95. At the moment they are available from Amazon Germany. However, Ufash have informed me that they will shortly be available in the UK from a major retailer of men's tights.

Conclusion

I found the fit of these tights to be excellent. They are very comfortable indeed and glide well under jeans or trousers. I wore them on a cool, windy day and they provided warmth as well as the feeling of a degree of leg support.

Free UK Delivery at Tights Please

Our friends at Tights Please have announced that until 31 October there will be FREE DELIVERY on all their products.

I have already blogged about Tights Please being a retailer who really cares about male customers buying tights for themselves. They even have a Tights for Men page on their website.

You can also read my recommendations for tights for autumn and winter from the selection at Tights Please.

My current Top 3 favourite tights from Tights Please (and all of these have been worn and reviewed) are:

1. Falke Pure Matt 100 Denier Tights

2. Charnos 60 Denier Opaque Tights

3. Levante Airskin 150 Denier Tights

Cooler weather and time for opaque tights

After the unseasonal heatwave we have experienced in London the last few days, it is a relief to have some cooler weather and the opportunity to wear tights again. It's definitely becoming the season for opaque tights - they are great for warmth, comfort and leg support.

Today I am wearing my Cette Dublin 60 denier opaque tights. The fabric in these tights is really nice, although they don't have a great deal of stretch. I am 5'10" and the large size fits me well, but it wouldn't suit anyone much taller.

By the way, these tights are available on a 20% off special offer from Tights Please.

Argyle tights for men

I have always liked argyle-patterned socks and have recently become aware of the range of argyle-style tights that are now available. If any readers of this blog or retailers spot any other designs that might be good for men, please leave a comment.

I recently gave a very positive review to the ADRIAN 60 Denier 'Grating' tights for men. These are now available in both the Black/Grey and Navy/Denim colours from Legwear4Men.

Tights Please were kind enough to recently send me some Red or Dead argyle tights samples. These were only available in 'one size' and weren't the best fit for me. However I really liked the designs, which you can see below.

Charnos have collaborated with Mary Portas to produce a new range of tights, including two with an attractive argyle pattern. These seem to be available at House of Fraser at present. Tights Please look like they will have them in stock shortly.

These Cotton Rich Heavyweight Argyle Tights from Marks and Spencer look good value at £9.50 and are also available in a Large/X Large size. There are three colours available: Grey Mix, Mulberry Mix and Navy Mix (pictured).

Jonathan Aston have also recently released a nice range of argyle tights in their Heritage Collection. I am not sold on the Green colour, although the Jonathan Aston website suggests that these tights will also be available in Grey, Navy and Black.
